Own Every Aspect of Your Life
Today I want to talk about owning our mistakes. When things go wrong or when we don't perform to our potential or when we don't act in a way that we're proud of, it is so important to own our mistakes. No making excuses. Because when we make excuses, we give up our power to change our lives, to truly learn and grow from whatever just happened.
Welcome to the Bed Head Chronicles.
Excuses leave us powerless.
At the root of resilience is taking responsibility for every aspect of our lives. From when we soar and we thrive in our lives, but also for when we're not at our best and don't perform well.
We need to own every aspect of this experience of life. We are in the driver's seat of our own lives.
Especially, for me, when I failed at the Olympic trials -- I wanted nothing more than to make the Olympic team in the year 2000. And I choked. I could have come up with a myriad of excuses, but instead, I owned it.
When the first person came up to me and asked what happened, I said I choked. I had prepared in my mind this absolutely perfect race from start to finish. I visualized it 365 days in a row. On the day of the race, within the first five minutes, I got dunked under the water. I lost the front pack. And I hadn't experienced that in my visualization. I wasn't prepared for that so I froze and I choked, and I could not perform.
Had I made up an excuse like I was sick or I got punched in the face or whatever, that was not going to help me grow. By owning my mistake -- by owning what happened -- I took charge of my life. I was able to respect myself. I was able to believe in my capacity to learn and grow and to fall down but get back up again and to ultimately achieve that ultimate dream that I had.
So, please, no excuses in life. Own everything that happens. Take charge of your life and your experience of it. You will find your capacity to learn, grow and be your best self is immeasurable.
Have an amazing day, everybody!
