Overcoming Anxiety, Sadness or Anger
Today, I want to talk about managing those moments when you are so overcome with an emotion like anxiety or anger or sadness and you can't get out of their own way and you literally feel like it's eating you from the inside out.
Maybe not all of you can relate to me on this, but I know I've certainly felt that way before. Now, we all exhibit discipline in our lives, whether it's waking up to go to school. Or waking up to work out and get to work. Or waking up to take care of our kids or take care of our animals. We all exhibit discipline on a daily basis.
Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the Bed Head Chronicles.
Use that same discipline to discipline your thoughts. Okay? It's just channeling that discipline in a different direction.
Imagine watching TV. Imagine you turn the channel and on this channel, it's something really horrible -- whether it's super scary or disgusting or it's just traumatic. It upsets you. What do you do? You quickly change a channel. You change it to something that's funny, a comedy, or change into something a love story. Whatever it is, you change a channel to something that makes you feel good. Okay?
Imagine your brain and your thoughts being like a big TV. And if you are stuck in a negative emotion, whether it be anger, sadness or just extreme upset of any kind, change the channel. Change what you're focusing on. I talk about this all the time. Change what you're focusing or change what you're thinking about. Use that same discipline that you use every single day in your lives in every other area, and use it in the direction of disciplining your thoughts. change the channel in your mind. Okay?
If you're obsessing over whether or not you did a good job at work today or what your boss is going to think or did you fail or did you win? Stop thinking about it. Change the channel. Focus on I did my best job. Okay, now, I'm going to focus on what can I do now? What kind of time can I spend with my family right now? What can I do to fill myself with energy right now? change the channel in your mind. Everybody has the capability of doing this. It takes practice. Okay?. It really does you've got to kind of build your muscle and being able to do that.
But once you acquire the ability and you become good at doing this, it's so much easier easier to snap yourself out of a really bad space. We all get super emotional. We all get stuck in moments of sadness or anger or anxiety, but let's start using what we already have, and that is the discipline and the will to behave inside of ourselves and start using that in directing our thoughts and being able to change the channel when we're not liking what we're thinking and how it's affecting us.
So, everybody, work on that today. You'll get better and better at it every day, and it truly is a very valuable skill to have and you'll experience so much more joy in your life and fewer times where you allow yourself to fall into that negative spiral of emotions.
Have a great day everyone. Thank you.
